The Creative Non-Fiction Collective Society is an Alberta-based, national organization established by Canadian writers to promote excellence in non-fiction writing through education, professional development and public information.
(adopted April 10, 2005)

April 2006

At the beginning of April 2006, two dozen of Canada’s leading professional non-fiction writers met at Banff to mark the official founding of Canada’s newest writers’ organization – THE CREATIVE NON-FICTION COLLECTIVE. The group had been meeting informally since 2004 to explore the range and potential of this rapidly growing genre, and to debate the social, cultural and ethical issues that define and preoccupy the genre and its practitioners.

“We have top-notch writers who tackle these issues, but many are still being ignored,” says author and Collective co-organizer (with Vancouver writer Betsy Warland) Myrna Kostash. “Yet the documentary genre in all the arts is really ‘hot’ right now, and Canadian readers need to know how our nonfiction writers are contributing to that excitement.”

The Creative Non-Fiction Collective plans to meet annually in Banff to increase creative non-fiction’s profile, to update writers about recent developments in the genre, to debate and discuss issues related to these developments, and to conduct public readings of their works. The Collective already operates a high-traffic listserv for its members.
